A Beginner’s Guide to Draping a Saree

Draping a saree might seem like a daunting task if you’ve never done it before. With six yards of fabric, it’s easy to get tangled up! But do not worry; with a little practice, anyone can master the art of the perfect drape. Here is a basic step-by-step guide to the classic Nivi drape.

Step 1: The Basic Tuck

Start by wearing your blouse and petticoat (or shapewear). Wear your heels *before* you start draping to get the length right. Take the non-pallu end of the saree and tuck it into the right side of your petticoat. Bring it around your waist once, tucking it in neatly as you go, until you reach the right side again.

Step 2: Measuring the Pallu

Take the other end of the saree (the pallu) and bring it around your back, over your left shoulder. Adjust the length of the pallu—ideally, it should fall to around your knee. Pin it to your blouse at the shoulder to keep it secure for now.

Step 3: Making the Pleats

Now, gather the loose fabric in the front and start making pleats. Use your thumb and index finger to fold the fabric into 5-7 neat pleats, about 4-5 inches wide. Ensure the pleats are even and fall straight.

Step 4: Tucking the Pleats

Gather the pleats firmly together and tuck them into the center of your petticoat, just below your navel. The pleats should open towards your left. Use a safety pin to secure the pleats together inside the petticoat so they don’t unravel.

Step 5: Perfecting the Pallu

Finally, adjust the pallu over your left shoulder. You can either leave it flowing or pleat it neatly and pin it up. Smooth out the front, and you’re ready to go!
