How to Store and Care for Your Heavy Handloom Sarees

Heavy handloom sarees, like Banarasis and Kanjeevarams, are investments that are often passed down through generations as heirlooms. However, they require careful maintenance to preserve their sheen and fabric integrity. Here is how to take care of them.

1. Always Dry Clean

Never wash heavy silk or zari sarees at home. The harsh chemicals in regular detergents can ruin the silk threads and tarnish the zari. Always opt for professional dry cleaning.

2. Store in Muslin Cloth

Do not store your expensive sarees in plastic covers. Plastic traps moisture, which can cause the zari to turn black. Instead, wrap them in unbleached cotton or muslin cloth. This allows the fabric to breathe while protecting it from dust.

3. Refold Regularly

If you leave a silk saree folded in the exact same creases for years, the fabric will eventually weaken and tear along those fold lines. Take out your heavy sarees every 3-4 months, air them out in a shaded area, and refold them differently.

4. Keep Pests Away

Instead of using naphthalene balls directly on the saree (which can leave a strong odor and sometimes stain), use natural repellents. Wrap dried neem leaves or cloves in a small cotton pouch and keep them in the corners of your wardrobe.

5. Ironing Precautions

Never iron directly on the zari work. Always iron the saree on a low heat setting, on the reverse side. For extra protection, place a thin cotton cloth between the iron and the saree.
